ROSEMARY Rosemarius officinalis *Certified Organic

Rosemary has been since the first century AD for its curative and rejuvenating properties. Applied to the skin, rosemary helps strengthen the capillaries. For this reason it is a common ingredient in many cosmetics, including skin toners, creams, soaps and hair products. Rosemary extract also has a long history of medicinal uses including the treatment of ailments ranging from digestive disorders to headaches. Recent research has attributed even more benefits to this remarkable herb, including its ability to help prevent cancer and age-related skin damage, boost liver functioning and act as a mild diuretic to help reduce swelling.

Two of the ingredients in rosemary thought to be largely responsible for these therapeutic actions are caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid – both potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents. These natural acids are effective at reducing the inflammation which may contribute to asthma, liver disease and heart disease.

MARINE COLLAGEN

Marine collagen is generally considered one of the best sources of collagen for human skin. Ours is extracted from shell beds deep on the ocean floor, not from animal sources.

Because collagen is a large molecule, it cannot easily penetrate skin cells without breaking them down. Fortunately, scientists have developed the “Polypeptides technology” that stimulates the synthesis of new collagen fibers in the skin. In skin care products, a combination of marine collagen to help stimulate collagen production and elastin collagen to encourage skin renewal and minimize muscle contractions, reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles and fine lines as well as helping provide long-term improvements in the appearance of deeper wrinkles.

SEAWEED EXTRACT Fucus gardneri

This naturally occurring sea vegetable contains a gel called Algin, beneficial primarily for its water retention properties. A good source of Vitamins A, B12 and C, seaweed is also rich in compounds that protect the outer layers of the skin, providing hydration and an effective barrier from harsh environments. In addition to being a potent antioxidant, it is packed with more than 60 vitamins, minerals, trace elements and amino acids including proline, glycine and lycine, all found in the elastin fibers of human skin. The phytonutirents in our seaweed extract help increase blood circulation thereby improving the skin’s firmness and elasticity and slowing the appearance of aging.

LICORICE Glycyrrhiza glabra

Licorice root is one of the most popular herbs in the world. Its properties as a natural whitening agent make licorice extract an invaluable active ingredient in many skin care products. Age and long-term exposure to the sun can result in skin discoloration, “age spots” and hyperpigmentation. When their effects are visible – especially in the areas around the face and eyes – topical formulations that include licorice extract can help reduce variations in skin tone. The glabridin found in licorice extract helps inhibit melanin production by hampering production of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin. Glabridin also has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In additional to skin lightening, licorice has been shown to protect the skin from external threats such as bacteria and to help shield it from the sun’s harmful rays, thereby helping to keep skin looking younger and hyperpigmentation from reoccurring.

SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS Lentinus edodes

Shiitake mushrooms are known for their antibacterial, antiviral and powerful antioxidant properties. They are a major source of selenium and iron and rich in protein, dietary fiber and Vitamin C. Shiitakes are full of protein, potassium, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus. A number of skin creams use shiitake mushrooms because they contain kojic acid, a natural skin brightener and have beneficial skin-tightening properties.

CALENDULA (MARIGOLD) Calendula officinalis *Certified Organic

The Calendula, commonly referred to as the Marigold, includes numerous plant species in the daisy family.

Today, the calendula herb is grown around the world and valued widely for its medicinal benefits which include the treatment of sunburns, bruises, scratches, insect stings, mumps, sore throat and swollen lymph glands. Marigold flower extract, known as the healing herb, is also beneficial for the treatment of a variety of skin irritations, infections and inflammations.

RED CLOVER Trifolium pratense

The wild perennial red clover is considered a weed by some, but its nutrient-rich flowers are widely used in both modern and traditional medicines. Red clover is a powerful antioxidant and an all-natural alternative therapy for a variety of ailments. This legume is a rich source of isoflavones – valuable additions to skin care products for their ability to stimulate the development of new skin cells, reduce the breakdown of collagen and prevent fats in the skin from turning into aggressive compounds. Isoflavones have been clinically shown to reduce wrinkles and prevent age related skin damage.

Red clover also contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, including niacin, thiamine, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, chromium and potassium. Red clover ointments are frequently effective in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema.

HYALURONIC ACID

Hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the joints and deeper layers of skin, has been dubbed “the key to the fountain of youth”. Frequently used to reduce dryness, itching and burning hyaluronic acid also promotes healing and the growth of new cells. An active ingredient in many topical anti-aging treatments, hyaluronic acid has proven itself highly effective at plumping and firming sagging skin, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, treating acne scars and healing damaged skin. Hyaluronic acid readily attaches itself to collagen and elastin fibres and is easily absorbed by the deepest layers of skin cells.

Hyaluronic acid does not occur naturally in plants but in 2009, after years of research, a method of producing ‘clean’ hyaluronic acid from plant cells was verified, providing a more efficient and ethical way of making this polysaccharide for biomedical purposes. Youva products use plant- based hyaluronic acid only.

AVOCADO – BIODYNAMIC Persea gratissima

Avocados yield an extremely deep-penetrating oil, rich in vitamins A, D and E, as well as potassium – commonly known as the mineral of youth. They also contain proteins, beta-carotene, lecithin and more than twenty percent essential unsaturated fatty acids. Their high concentrations of sterolins help to reduce the appearance of age spots, sun damage and scars. It is the sterolins (somtimes called plant steroids) in the oil that help soften the skin and impart an enhanced moisturizing effect. Avocado oil is easily absorbed into deep tissue where it significantly increases the amount of collagen in the skin. With its wonderfully emollient properties avocado oil is an ideal ingredient for mature, dehydrated, sun or climate damaged skin. It also helps to relieve the dryness and itching of psoriasis and eczema.

MACADAMIA – BIODYNAMIC Macadamia ternifolia

Macadamia nut oil is highly stable and effective for virtually all skin types but it is especially beneficial for dry and mature skin, primarily as a result of its high concentration of palmitoleic acid – the highest concentration of any plant oil. Palitoleic acid is naturally present in human sebum during youth, but it diminishes considerably as one ages. Palitoleic acid softens and moisturizes mature skin and also helps heal mild wounds. Macadamia nut oil is light, non-greasy and absorbed very easily by the skin and the scalp where it helps cells rejuvenate. It is effective at preventing sunburns and helps the skin retain its moisture. Macadamia oil also acts as an anti-oxidant, preventing damage to skin cells by free radicals.
